“Guilt Trip: What Does ‘Atonement’ Mean for Humanistic Jews?”
Jewish tradition says that we’re required to apologize for harms we inflict on one another for atonement to be complete on Yom Kippur. What does that mean for Humanistic Jews? Does the tradition’s understanding of guilt, apology, and atonement matter for us? Are there ways to understand the tradition on our own terms? With Rabbi Jeremy, we’ll examine sources from the II Samuel to Sherwin Wine and explore ways of thinking through these ideas as the High Holidays approach.
