Dr. Eric Lander, the new White House Science Advisor, generated lots of attention in the Jewish and secular press when he chose to be sworn in on a bound copy of what he characterized as a 500 year-old book on ethics. The pages may have been 500 years old — but the work itself, Mishnah Avot, is nearly 2000 years old. What’s in it? Is it really just about ethics? Why does it continue to occupy a major place in Jewish life and thought? Do we want science advisors being sworn in on it?
