After last week’s overview of Maimonides, this week and the next will focus on Maimonides’s Guide of the Perplexed (and, secondarily, others of Maimonides’s works as relevant). We’ll explore what the purpose of the Guide is (a question that is not uncontroversial), what the Guide actually says about Judaism as Maimonides understood it, how the Guide contributes to our understanding of Maimonides’s project of redefining Jewish belief, and whether we can see any kind of precedent for Humanistic Judaism in Maimonides’s thought.
