A message from Machar President, Elaine Dancis:
Dear members of Machar family,

PLEASE SAVE THE DATE – Saturday March 5^th beginning at 5:30pm (on Zoom and in person).

Machar: The Washington Congregation for Secular Humanistic Judaism, will be a proud participant in the National Refugee Shabbat, during which Jews in the United States and around the world will take action for refugees and asylum seekers.

This event is especially important to me because I was a refugee who came to this country and was supported by HIAS and Jews like you.

With more than 84 million people worldwide who have fled their homes due to persecution and violence, we are now witnesses to one of the largest humanitarian crises in human history. This past year, as the number of displaced people continued to grow, our hearts have swelled at the massive global effort to evacuate and find safe homes for Afghans fleeing for their lives; and they have broken seeing people whose lives are in danger of being turned away at border crossings around the world. This is a critical moment for all of us to reaffirm and redouble our support for refugees and asylum seekers.

As Machar in collaboration with the Beth Chai Congregation Social Action Committee begins a project to support an Afghan refugee family, Refugee Shabbat will be an opportunity to once again raise awareness in our communities, to recognize the work that has been done, and to reaffirm our commitment to welcoming refugees and asylum seekers.

Rabbi Jeremy will be leading the Havdalah service at our house. Barry and I are inviting Machar members to our house in Silver Spring. For Covid safety we will host up to 12 people (vaccinated and boosted) – first come, first serve.

In addition to the in-person event, we will have a Zoom session so everyone may participate.  We hope you will join this important event in person or on Zoom.
