A note from Rabbi Jeremy on the change in location for May 15 session ONLY:

Dear Machar members and JCS Families,

As you know, we’re fast approaching the end of the school year. And it is of course as we near the end that we have a little logistical hiccup.

Due to work being done at our usual meeting location, we will meet for JCS on May 15 — and only on May 15 — at the Milton Gottesman School’s Lower School campus, located two miles south of our usual location, at 4715 16th St NW in DC, at the intersection of 16th St NW and Decatur St NW. The building is smaller, but it is equipped for our needs for both our JCS students and for our adult ed programs. Some of our families will remember having used this building in the past.

There is no parking lot. However, there is ample on-street parking in this area. Because the school hosts smaller children during the week, the classroom furniture is a little smaller, but the same basic technology is in place, including WiFi.

Parents who wish to participate in Adult Ed will be able to do so in the school building’s multipurpose room on the first floor of the building; we’ll have a laptop set up to join the Zoom session, as we do for other such sessions at our usual location.

After class on the 15th, the Machar Social Action Committee will be coordinating a litter cleanup in Rock Creek Park at Picnic Site #24. Please join us at noon, after Sunday School and adult ed. Please bring lunch or a snack and a sheet or blanket to sit on.

Directions to Picnic Site #24: head north on 16th St. NW for a little less than a mile, and turn left at the light onto Morrow Dr. NW, and then take the first left onto Stage Rd. NW. Follow the road past the playground and the picnic site and make a left into the parking lot. We will meet for lunch under the big tree in front of the playground.

The Social Action Committee will provide gloves, bags and macaroons.  Community service hours will be available; please bring your school’s form!

Our final class for the school year will take place on May 22 at our usual meeting place — 6045 16h St NW. Our last class sessions for JCS will not be grade-level classes, but instead will be a set of lifecycle rooms for students to visit and learn from in an age-appropriate way. After class on May 22, at 12:30 pm, we will have an end-of-the-year picnic at Cabin John Regional Park in Bethesda. Please come out to celebrate the end of the school year and the coming of summer!

David Peimer – The Image of the Jew in Contemporary Film: Shylock, a case study

Interpretations of Shylock in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice give us a picture of how the Jewish man is seen today, as both ‘citizen’ and ‘alien’, ‘other and othered’, insider and outsider. Professor Peimer will discuss how some of the greatest actors have portrayed Shylock. Born in South Africa and now working in the UK, Peimer  has written, published, and directed theater in New York, South Africa, and Europe. He is writing a new play and a libretto for a new opera on the life of Stephen Hawking.

You may notice on the registration page that the Zoom meeting is scheduled to begin at 9:30am. This is so that the hosts and speakers can get on Zoom, sort out any glitches, and settle in before the presentation begins at 10am. The Adult Ed session itself officially begins at 10am and runs until 11:30am.
