Gene Bruskin – Reflections on Labor and Working Class Culture
Gene Bruskin will give a presentation addressing his 40 years as a union organizer and the 3 musicals he has written since retirement, influenced by Judaism’s role in 20th century labor and cultural movements.
(You can watch scenes from one of his musicals, The Moment Was Now, by clicking on the title. This musical about Reconstruction examines the post-civil war struggles for unity by leaders of civil rights, women’s rights, and workers’ rights movements, and lessons for today.)
Bruskin’s presentation on Sunday will particularly focus on the 16-year long strike at Smithfield where he was the lead organizer, about which the acclaimed documentary film, UnionTime-Justice at Smithfield was made. (https://www.uniontimefilm.org/ – Gene is in it!)
Bruskin has been a local union president, an organizer, and campaign coordinator of local and national unions, and is a founder of US Labor Against the War.
